The Game Gear was released by Sega in 1991 in North America. Containing a full-color backlit screen with a landscape format, Sega marketed the Game Gear as a technologically superior handheld to its main rival, the Game Boy. However, it is huge, had a smaller gaming library, and burns through 6 AA batteries in no time.
