Super Mario Galaxy

  • 3D platfromer
  • Creative gravity dynamics
  • 2007 Game of the Year
  • A must have

Super Mario Galaxy is the third 3D game in the Super Mario series released for the Wii on November 12th, 2007. Upon release, it won several awards, including multiple “Game of the Year” titles, and became the first Nintendo title to win the British Academy Games Award for Best Game and is argued to be among one of the best video games ever created. The game is the ninth best-selling Wii game worldwide with sales of 12.75 million, as well as the best-selling 3D entry in the Super Mario series.

Pros:

When I saw another damn Mario game I thought, “Nintendo how about we try something new and not just the same old stuff”, but I quickly came to realize that this was a whole new level for the franchise. It’s not only one of the best Mario games ever created (if not the best) but arguably competes in the “best video game of all time” category. The 3d graphics of the Mario universe are the best thus far. The various worlds, each with drastically unique levels and multiple starts to get in each. Not to mention hidden stars, hidden levels and even an optional Garden solar system you can play through just for more fun.

To 100% this game is totally optional and gives a great, I wouldn’t say replay value, but more of a keep playing value even after you have beat the final boss.

There are some awesome new powerups for Mario like ice Mario, ghost Mario and some not so successful additions like the unimpressive but cute bumblebee suit, the almost uncontrollable spring suit. Though they are all fun in their own way.

However, what really makes this game is the gravity dynamics. Mario can stick to all sides of an object adding a whole new and awesome dynamic in this game. They even play with this concept where they flip the pull of gravity on your for some more creative challenges.

The Music in this game is really awesome too. It really holds true to its original roots, which creating a new dynamic and best of all Nintendo hired a full orchestra to record the soundtrack for this game. So its really on a whole new level. Enjoy a few here:

Cons:

Oddly enough the coolest things about this game is also one of its biggest annoyances. When switching from one side of an object (or one gravitational direction to another) you can sometimes get caught in this weird middle zone for a second that sends you to whichever direction it sees fit instead of what you might have intended. You usually end up landing on something, …usually, and then you can always try again. The controls can also get a bit reversed in this process and you can find your self a bit confused as to which way to point the joystick just to make Mario move forward. It’s really not too bad, you can tell they thought this through and worked out most of the knicks and the few remaining ones are still workable, but I would say are not perfect.

The Swimming dynamics is also not great, which is nothing new to the 3d world Mario, but oddly enough the flying system is better because you have a stop and point feature to help you get going in the right direction. I also found the game a bit on the simplistic/easy/short side of things but there were plenty of really good and creative challenges regardless of eas.

Conclusion:

This is a really great video game that managed to successfully, dynamically, and drastically build upon the classic Super Mario franchise. A must for the Wii and a Retro Nerd Must as well. If you love Super Mario and/or platformers, this may well be one of the best games ever created in your book.
