Super Mario Bros. is one of the first iconic game of video game history. It was published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Released as a sequel to the 1983 game Mario Bros. Super Mario Bros. was released in North America on September 13, 1985. The game sold enormously well, and was the best-selling game of all time for a single platform for approximately three decades at over 40 million units, until Nintendo’s Wii Sports took that title. It is hailed by many critics as “pioneering” and “highly influential” and one of the “greatest games of all time”.

Pros:

This still manages to be a fun game after all of these years. The level of challenge and reward is really well balanced. The levels give you quite a bit of variation for such an old game too. You go underground levels, underwater levels, mushroom levels, castle levels, etc. and the powerups are great too! Nothing like picking up a star and just mowing down your enemies. You can also rock a couple of warp zones too that will take you through to the end of the game quite quickly if you just want to beat it. Also, the music is so classic, needless to say.

Here are some fun random glitches and tricks you can pull off on the original NES version. Good luck rocking these.

Cons:

Problems with this game, no saves. You play, you die, you start over, and you do that until you beat the game. That is classic Nintendo though. And the underwater levels, seriously who likes underwater levels, they are all terrible. Also, I think for some, this game can be a bit it too hard and for others it’s too easy, I guess it depends mainly on if you are a gamer or not. The graphics might turn some people off, but come, view it with on some historic perspective here, and the fact that you literally just move in just one direction more or less, you really can’t go back more or less. These classic Mario also had a timer you had to beat for every level, which is annoying, but really not much of a pain if you are on it.

Conclusion:

It really is a classic, still fun to play and no one can deny the impact it has made on the franchise, Nintendo and the entire history of video games. Truly and easily a Retro Nerd must!
