Crash of the Titans

  • Platformer
  • 14th instalment of Crash Bandicoot
  • A fun co-op mode
  • Ok, but not a must

Crash of the Titans is a platform game published by Sierra Entertainment and developed by Radical Entertainment. It was released in North America on October 4, 2007, for pretty much every console available at the time, and even had portable ports for the PSP, DS and even the sidescrolling version for the Gameboy Advanced (which plays nothing like this version). Crash of the Titans is the fourteenth instalment in the Crash Bandicoot video game series and the sixth game in the main franchise, but it is the first in the Mutant series. It is also the first game in the Crash Bandicoot series not to have a Japanese release. The game received mixed reviews, but despite this mediocre reception, the game was nominated for two awards and stands as a safe addition to the franchise. The Xbox 360 version is actually considered on the rarer side of the games found for the console.

Pros:

So in this game you have to go around collecting “Mojo”, which Cortex uses to mutate animals into “Titans”. Crash uses the Uga Uga mask to take control of these Titans and use their various powers to destroy and defeat your enemies. When I first started play I was surprised and bit disappointed as to how little the franchise had seemed to have grown since the days of PS1. I was about to put down the controller when I ran into my first Titan and the game breathed new life. The Titans are pretty cool and varied and each one has its own set of attacks. You also have kind of a class system for your Titans based on size, and usually you have to “jack” smaller Titan to work your way up to the bigger Titans. Crash has also got an improved attack system is fun with combos that upgrade as you go. You can use the Uga Uga mask as a shield or as a board to skate across the level and various obstacles. There some cameos for older characters, “punny” comedic relief in various dialog and some decent cutscenes littered throughout. Levels have secrets, unlockables, and sidequest you can have some fun challenging yourself with. All in all, a classic platformer.

Co-op is probably the best part of this game in the way that it is so well refined to avoid really annoying problems. When you find yourself at a classic jump from platforms or swing on a vine moment, one player can jump into the other player’s backpack. That way you avoid any really petty mistakes easy to make when there are two of you trying to scale something at the same time. Also in this game enemies usually come in packs and quickly gang up on you so haveing a second player to back you up is kind of where it’s at.

Here is a commercial for the game, heads up… it’s pretty dumb.

Cons:

This game is very linear, I know that’s a classic for platformers, but this is the 360 we are talking about here, even some prior Crash games were more open world, so why the step back? The camera is more or less locked with the option for you to slightly wiggle it if you will. Character design is a bit goofy, Crash has corny tribal tattoos, looks like a “bro” and sounds like he is on speed while he incoherently babbles. You can quickly get the hang of the system of how to take down Titans, which makes them easy(er), but it can start to feel really repetitive and once it does the only really new thing in this game is no longer fun and new and the whole game just starts to feel like a “been there, done that” type of situation. Some complain about this game being a bit short, but I felt about right for me, maybe because I was pretty done with it. My biggest issue with this game is that it’s just so simple and dated, seriously this is as far as you have gotten with the franchise? If I had never heard of Crash before or never played a platformer, this would probably be a really fun game, but almost everything in this games feels like you are just going through the motions and the only unique part (the Titans) can get pretty repetitious too.

Conclusion:

It’s an ok game, best played as with a friend in co-op mode. Not a must in the collection, but you might think about getting it if you like the classic Crash platformer, but you want to play it with a friend.
