Mario Kart 64 is a go-kart racing game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64 (N64) and released in 1996 . It was the successor to the popular Super Mario Kart for the SNES, which many hipster gamers claim to be the best of the series… but we all know that the N64 version is better.
Pros:
It is a fantastic party game. It is easy to pick up and play, and even someone who isn’t experienced with it should have a relatively easy time actually mixing it up a bit. The game has several options like battle mode, grand prix, etc. but the good old fashion versus mode with four players is probably where everyone has spent most of their time with this game.
The game is balanced quite well with the “randomization” of weapons you can pick up. If you are in first place the weapons you pick up are almost always garbage and if you are in last place the weapons you get are amazing. This really helps keep the game interesting and manages to make almost every match a nail biter to the end.
That being said, here is a list of cheat that will make all your friends hate you. Some of these are a bit hard to believe.
Cons:
However, when you are a little too good at this game it can get pretty brutal pretty quick. A few specific tracks have some intentional and also some not so intentional shortcuts that can really put a bias in the ranks of the race. What’s even worse is a few levels have some opportunities for your more experienced opponents to take you down in just such a way that you get stranded half way back in the level. Finally, I have had the “pleasure” of playing with some expert level Mario Kart 64 players whose main goal is not to end up miles in front of you, but to constantly be on your tail so they can just keep attacking you with weapons… and at the end they manage to steal the 1st place position as well, of course. So as a general rule, don’t go out of your way to be a jerk in this game, just because you can.
Conclusion:
This game is a MUST for any N64 collection and any Retro Nerd!
